The Details

In Florida

You must be registered to vote in an upcoming election at least 29 days before that election. To be able to vote in upcoming primary partisan races you also must be registered with the party of your choice at least 29 days before that election.

Requirements – Legal Status

Persons who preregister at 16 or 17 years of age will receive a voter registration card upon turning 18 and at that time also will be able to access their personal voter registration page online.

Persons with prior felony convictions who have completed all terms of their sentence automatically have their right to vote restored, UNLESS THE FELONY WAS ONE OF MURDER OR SEXUAL OFFENSE. In this latter case only the Florida Clemency Board can restore the right. “Terms of sentence” includes prison or jail time; parole, probation and other forms of supervision; payment of the total amount of all fines, fees, costs, and restitution ordered as part of the felony sentence (that is, subsequent court costs are excluded from this calculation). A felony conviction in another state makes a person ineligible to vote in Florida only if the conviction would make the person ineligible to vote in the state where the person was convicted.  Questions about the status of one’s sentence should be addressed to the Clerk of Courts of the county where the sentence was imposed.

Requirements – Identification

You must possess a valid Florida ID or driver’s license. If you do not have these then use the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Party Affiliation

Florida is a closed primary state: you can only vote in partisan primary races if you are registered with a political party holding a primary.

Failure to select a party affiliation will automatically assign you No Party Affiliation (NPA), which prevents you from voting in partisan primaries.

NPA in Florida IS NOT the Independent Party, which is a separately registered party.

When you update your voter registration, ALWAYS BE SURE TO AFFIRM OR CHANGE YOUR PARTY AFFILIATION.  Otherwise, you will be assigned the NPA affiliation.

Registering

Electoral participation in Florida is organized by county, so it is recommended getting used to visiting the website of the Supervisor of Elections (SOE) in the county where you are registered. However, if you register to vote ONLINE for the first time in Florida, selecting the “Register to Vote” tab on the SOE site will automatically take you to the Division of Elections of the Florida Department of State:

https://registertovoteflorida.gov/home

Once registered you will want to visit your personal registration page on the SOE website to verify your registration status, make changes, and access important election information. Select the tab for checking your registration status (it varies by name in the different counties). KNOWING HOW TO ACCESS YOUR PERSONAL REGISTRATION PAGE GIVES YOU CONTROL OVER YOUR REGISTRATION STATUS AND ELECTORAL PARTICIPATION.
